Founded in 2018, DataCrunch Oy is a cloud service provider specializing in computational power and tools for AI development. Catering specifically to AI developers, the company focuses on building infrastructure for cutting-edge AI solutions, facilitating the deployment and integration of the latest AI/ML models. As a rapidly growing startup in the IT sector, DataCrunch employs 25 people and reported a €3.6 million turnover last year, increasing its revenue by over 110% compared to the previous year. This year, the company continues on an accelerated growth trajectory.
The paths of two growth companies, Alder and DataCrunch, crossed in 2021, when urgent legal matters required expert guidance. DataCrunch’s CFO, Tuukka Saukkonen, found the right legal partner through his LinkedIn network, and within a short timeframe, the collaboration began, setting the foundation for an ongoing partnership.
For a fast-scaling company, legal questions arise constantly. Over the years, Alder has provided advisory services to DataCrunch on employee incentives, financing agreements, corporate governance, and client contracts. Most recently, the focus has been on preparing for an upcoming funding round, ensuring the company is structurally prepared for its next growth phase. Alder has supported DataCrunch in navigating the legal and tax complexities that accompany growth, assisting with contract reviews, regulatory compliance, and strategic legal planning.
Tuukka particularly values Alder’s ability to provide comprehensive legal support from a single point of contact, eliminating the inefficiencies of searching for the right expert for each issue. One standout example has been Alder’s innovative approach to convertible loan agreements, a common instrument for startups.
“We had initially followed the traditional approach to convertible loans, but Alder introduced us to a more streamlined alternative, resembling the U.S. SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) instrument. In Finland, the default tends to be a cumbersome, highly administrative process for convertible loans, even though a much leaner approach is possible with the right ownership structure. Now, we have a standardized agreement template ready whenever we discuss with investors,” Tuukka explains.
“Everything is handled efficiently and quickly from a single point of contact. No time is wasted figuring out who can help with a particular issue.”
The positive experience from the beginning of the partnership has remained consistent over the years. “Whenever we ask a question, we receive a response that clearly shows thorough expertise and attention to detail,” Tuukka acknowledges. He also highlights Alder’s ability to simplify complex legal frameworks, such as stock option agreements, ensuring they are easy to implement independently in the future. Additional key milestones include employee share issuances and structuring equity offerings. Currently, the trademark application process is in progress.
Over time, this trusted collaboration has led to a low-threshold approach to legal support—whenever an issue arises, DataCrunch knows it can reach out without hesitation. “We have developed a deep understanding of the client’s business, allowing us to initiate new assignments smoothly, without extensive background research,” summarizes Mia Häyrinen, who has been closely involved in the partnership. She continues: “Working with DataCrunch and Tuukka has been seamless and efficient. Communication flows easily, and we can move forward with tasks even on tight schedules.
